The USPA is pleased to announce our 7th webinar "Advances in Remote Sensing of Permafrost Dynamics" presented by Dr. Kevin Schaefer on October 9th. Register here: https://uspa.memberclicks.net/webinar7.
Content of Webinar: We will focus on advances in the use of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) to study permafrost dynamics. Water in the soil expands when frozen, resulting in surface subsidence when the active layer thaws in summer and frost heave when the active layer refreezes in fall. Satellite and aircraft InSAR can measure this seasonal subsidence and use the Remotely Sensed Active Layer Thickness (ReSALT) algorithm to estimate Active Layer Thickness, soil moisture, thermokarst activity, fire impacts, and other processes. The webinar presents ReSALT and highlights results using both airborne radar from NASA’s Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) and satellite radar from various satellites. The webinar ends with a discussion of paths for future development.
